Welcome to my blog, Exceptionalities in the Classroom. I hope this is a useful resource for teachers and parents alike. I have amassed a collection of resources that I find to be valuable in helping me understand and accommodate all my students in the classroom. Please refer to the list of exceptionalities on the side bar to the right for a complete list of resources.

Kauffman, J., M. and Landrum, T. J. (2009) Characteristics of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders of Children and Youth. Upper Saddle River, N.J.: Merrill.
This book chronicles the history, the definition & prevalence of Emotional & Behavioural Disorders (EBD's). There are chapters on family, school and cultural factors and different types of EBD's ranging from anxiety to depression to schizophrenia.

Pierangelo, R. and Giuliani G. (2008) Classroom Management for Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders: A Step-by-Step Guide for EducatorsThousand Oaks, Calif.: Corwin Press.
This book starts with a review of what emotional & behavioural disorders are and a guide to help people understand them.  Following this, are sections on looking at EBD's with a cultural lens, understanding and applying the Principles of Reinforcement and promoting positive social interactions among students with emotional and behavioral disorders.  There are also sections on applying and implementing strategies.

Lane, K. L. and  Frank M. Gresham, Tam E. O'Shaughnessy. (2002) Interventions for Children with or At Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. Boston: Allyn and Bacon.
This book looks at EBD's and academic achievement.  It offers guidance for successful early interventions and what to look for in at risk kids. There is a focus on proactive approaches, which spoke to me, as I believe that it is smart to be proactive wherever possible. The book outlines academic issues subject by subject which is very handy.
