Temple Grandin: A Movie.
A biopic of Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who has become one of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry. (source) This movie shows what remarkable achievements children with asperger's can accomplish; there is a beautiful side to this exceptionality. 









The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time: a novel by Mark Haddon. 
A fascinating tale told through the voice of a young boy with autism. It is a great read and an intriguing look into the way one child with autism sees the world. A great perspective on the cognitive thought process that can occur with autism.
  
McConnell, K., and Ryser, G. (2005) Practical Ideas that really Work for Students with Asperger's Syndrome. Los Angeles, Calif.: WPS. 
This book offers ideas and tips for teaching students with asperger's in an inclusive classroom.  It also offers a rating scale for evaluation of children with asperger's.  One neat feature of this book is that it has helpful photocopiable pages of emotions and gestures that help to teach children with Asperger's. One example is a picture of someone turning around and walking away after saying "goodbye" as those are some of the social cues that children with Asperger's need help learning.    
Ashcroft, W., Argiro, S., & Keohane, J. (2010) Success Strategies for Teaching Kids with Autism. Waco, Texas: Prufrock Press Inc.                                                                   This is an excellent resource if you would like to learn more about all of the disorders covered under the umbrella category of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). It also very helpful in understanding how to create an education that best enables children with any ASD to reach their full potential offering a nice overview of some of the different characteristics that ASD presents with. The book also describes Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) quite well.
www.abaresources.com: For Further information on ABA please refer to this site. It is a parent-started providing parents (and educators) access to ABA resources at an affordable cost. It is also a place to connect with other parents with children that have a child with an ASD.
 
Hope-West, A. (2011) Securing Appropriate Education Provision for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Guide for Parents & Professionals. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers.                                                                                    This book offers up-to-date information on the diagnosis process and educational provisions children with autism ought to receive. It follows the story of a mother trying to help her son, diagnosed with autism, get the education he deserves. It offers an overview of the different educational strategies used in helping children with ASD, such as: behavioral approaches, interactive approaches, communication & social interactive approaches.
Spears, C. L., & Turner, V. L. (2011) Rising to New Heights of Communication and Learning for Children with Autism. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers.                                     This book offers significant details on the "Alternative-Augmentative Communication" (AAC) methods approach to helping children with autism communicate.  This section explains the use of Speech Generating Devices, picture systems and symbolic language systems. There is also a section on strategies that help to increase the learning of a child with autism, focusing a lot on visual supports. The back of the book has an extensive list of resources to refer to organized into specific categories.

You will find diagnostic criteria, advice for parents and advice for teaching students with autism.  This a great resources for parents and teachers. It also links parents to forms and advice they might need for a child with autism in the British Columbia school system.
